It’s a well-known fact that Volkswagen of South Africa built a modernized version of the original Golf (“Mark 1”) right up to the point where it couldn’t cope with safety and emissions standards. The Citi Golf lived from 1984 to 2009 as a youthful and affordable mode of transport in southern Africa. NamWheels gives you some details:
Four years ago, Volkswagen achieved the unthinkable, in a car which is fairly well known on South-African and Namibian roads. Completing a 19 000km route across 21 countries in a time of nine days, four hours and eight minutes, a team of three Germans travelled from Cape Agulhas (South Africa) to Norkapp (Norway).
With the new Jimny said to go on sale in November 2018, here is a look back at the car that crept into many hearts; including ours.
Loved by many, the Suzuki Jimny has a very rich history in southern Africa.

There are cars with lots of history, there are cars with a few generations of ancestors, and then there’s the Mercedes-Benz SL. The drop-top from Stuttgart with “Sport Leicht” on its rump can trace its ancestry back further than most modern automobiles.
1903: William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson build their first motorcycle.
1910: The “Bar & Shield” logo is used for the first time. It is trademarked one year later.
The satin sledgehammers
A recent purchase by one of our staff members has spurred us on to finally delve into the history of certain performance cars. But don’t worry – we shall use this opportunity to cover other brands, genres and eras as well. In fact, why don’t you drop us a line and tell us which car’s history you’d like to see?
