Sprint Review: 2024 Land-Rover Discovery Sport PHEV

One of the world’s leading 4×4 manufacturers has gone all modern in recent years. Now they’ve added mild hybrid power to their entry-level offering…

You should know: It’s extremely unlikely for a press vehicle to be the base model, so you’re currently looking at a Discovery Sport P300e Dynamic HSE in Varesine Blue with Black Contrast Roof, Black Roof Rails Gloss Black 20-inch alloy wheels and Ebony Windsor (black) leather interior. In other words, a great idea for the dusty African bush!

More info: This vehicle also had a Technology Pack, Comfort Pack and Towing Pack, plus Meridian sound system, colourful brake calipers and a panoramic glass roof which bumped up the base price of R1.8 million by another R84,400. We found the audio system a bit disappointing but can recommend most of the other optional extras.

Why you should: The size and efficiency of this new drive train was a most welcome surprise, as this 1.5L turbo-petrol 3-cylinder with mild hybrid assist can deliver up to 227kW or 540Nm through a smooth 8-speed automatic gearbox to all four wheels; via multiple drive modes and Land-Rover’s Terrain Response system.

Its maker claims 0-100km/h in 6.6 seconds, but our best attempt was 7.35. In full EV mode, it takes about 24 seconds. We also couldn’t find exact fuel (or electricity) use averages online, but saw 8.2L/100km from the 58L tank on our mixed driving routes. Or 0.0L/100km for slower and shorter distances, as this Disco Sport can do up to 66km (or 130km/h) in full EV mode.

Why you shouldn’t: The battery is probably too small for most EV or hybrid disciples, but at least it’ll charge to 80% in about half an hour; given the right charger. Speaking of which, it appears that Land-Rover will charge you extra to provide a home-use charging cable… tsk, tsk, tsk. That’s not how you promote sales, Landy!

A personal gripe – which applies to other brands too – is that the previous Discovery Sport still had physcial ventilation controls (with a hidden cubby behind them) but this car has gone the full Monty: every single audio, ventilation, drive mode or vehicle setting is now in a sleek touch-screen. And everything disappears when the reverse camera activates…

What else? The three drive modes (Hybrid, EV or Save) are great to extend your battery charge and/or fuel, steering response is snappier than expected, the cabin (on this 5-seater model) is still very spacious and comfy, there are cabin charging points almost everywhere and at least it retains a bit of Land-Rover DNA by offering 209mm of ground clearance and 600mm wading depth.

In summary, of course this new Disco Sport PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) joins all its rivals by being extremely pricey. The comparably tiny 1.5L engine and clever hybrid system provide sufficient shove up to about 140km/h, plus you have the wonderful option of just popping to the shops and back using no fuel at all. Just set up your audio and heating before engaging reverse…
