This is the new Changan Deepal S07 L in, uhh, Comet White. And what you really need to know about this full EV coupé SUV is that it’s actually two cars rolled into one…
You should know: Yup. If you’re into the newest gadgets, like an iphone Galaxy 30 Maxi Pro, this jaw-dropping Lamborghini Urus copy will BLOW YOUR MIND with its flippy-outy door handles, buttons for interior handles, frameless windows, a head-up display instead of instruments, plus the obligatory tablet… which actually moves.
What else: However. If you enjoy simple and sensible vehicles, this will be THEE most frustrating device you’ll ever have the displeasure of operating. Mostly due to its upside down window switches, lack of a volume knob, constantly changing head-up and info screen content, plus touch-screen controlled wipers AND air vents.
More info: I just need to stress at this point that everything – and I do mean everything – is controlled by this device. The central screen can be animated to swivel in multiple horizontal angles, although the passenger-heavy lean on our press vehicle lead me to believe that the transition to right-hand drive wasn’t quite successful.
Why you shouldn’t: Have I mentioned its frustrating operation yet? Oh, I did. Right. There’s also the current price of JUST under 1 bar, charging woes in southern Africa, and the fledgling Changan dealer network, although you do get a 5-year/100,000km vehicle warranty and service plan, plus an 8-year / 150,000km battery warranty.
Why you should: Umm, judging by my powers of observation, I guarantee that you’ll have the first Deepal S07 L on your block and if you can beat the demonstration effect (which I repeatedly couldn’t) it can even put on a light and music show for the entertainment of all your friends and relatives.
Conclusion: This new Deepal luxury EV won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, nor does it currently fit into our traditional car landscape, but Changan has to be applauded for the level of refinement and sophistication in this all-new product. It’s either horrible or completely amazing. The choice is yours.
