Sprint Review: Volvo XC90 T6 Inscription

You’ve made it this far. That big Volvo is keeping you awake at night and all you require is a nudge over (or away from) the purchasing ledge. We’re always happy to help.

Why you should: Look, you probably have that bit figured out already. It looks amazing, has modern design elements and a stunning interior. The drive train tech and gadgets are top-class while the beeeg XC90 body is cushioned on clever air suspension; thus offering plenty of space and superb levels of comfort.

“…plenty of space and superb levels of comfort.”

More info: Apparently the Swedish manufacturer wants to go all-electric in the near future but for now you have the choice between turbo-diesel (“D”) or turbo-petrol (“T”) engines. The range-topping T8 offers extra clout from a plug-in hybrid system while this T6 uses turbo- AND super-charging to bring forth 225kW or 400Nm.

What else? In plain English it means that this relatively small engine has dual assistance and absolutely no problems in propelling its sizable host; at almost any speed. The eight-speed automatic gearbox provides good ratios and smooth, reasonably fast shifts to an intelligent all-wheel drive system.

Our performance testing yielded a best 0-100km/h time of 6.88 seconds while reversing the process took just 2.58 seconds and 36.89 metres. Excellent values for a two-ton SUV! Shift points at max rpm (6,500) in the first four gears were around 60, 90, 140 and 180km/h so there’s plenty of kick-down overtaking potential.

Why you shouldn’t: Unless you’re buying a pre-owned unit, the base price of R1.125 million. Depreciation and dealer count may be two more negatives but they boil down to personal finances, logical reasoning and geography. You should also be aware that this is a very large automobile and that its feisty engine drains the 70L tank faster than you may like…

Summary: You want one. Because it’s a wonderfully spacious and comfy, beautifully crafted and designed behemoth with a rabid motor, great ride, outstanding sound system and brilliant headlights. If you have to fuel it yourself, consider a D5. But if someone else paid my fuel bill, I would get this XC90 T6 in a heartbeat.
