Wow, did we get stopped and questioned about this car! It’s no surprise though, because it’s a locally built and sensible crossover sold at a decent price.
You should know: It’s also a Toyota, so pick a colour (usually white), just add petrol and off you go. Which is probably why everyone wanted to have a closer look at this face-lifted HEV model, available in XS, XR or GR-S spec, with prices ranging from R495,000 to R562,000.
More info: The entire Corolla Cross range is powered by a 1.8L 4-cylinder petrol engine with 103kW and 172Nm, or 90kW and 142Nm for this hybrid model. No Manuals or all-wheel drive models are available. We did 0-100 in 11.29 seconds, reversing the process took just 2.78 seconds and 39.22m, while Toyota SA says that the top speed is 170km/h. Or 180km/h.
Why you shouldn’t: Umm, because they’ve become very popular so you might try to open the wrong car at your local mall’s parking lot? Also, average fuel consumption drops from 6.8L/100 for the regular Cross to just 4.3L for this HEV but, probably to accommodate the hybrid battery, so does the fuel tank size: from 47L to 36.
What else? This reduces the theoretical range, although there are benefits to this hybrid power plant, especially in slow city traffic, which allows short stints of pure EV driving at very low speeds. And while the cabin fit and finish are very impressive, the bonnet sounds completely hollow; especially if you extract its cheap prop rod.
Why you should: The ‘rolla Cross Hybrid may have the same crossover problems as everyone else – limited rear visibility, initially complicated infotainment system, etc. – but it quickly becomes an easy and comfy companion which masters school runs and highway commutes with equal aplomb.
In summary: Now add the usual safety and convenience specs, a fairly decent ride and big boot, mix with a 3-year / 100,000km warranty, throw in an 8-year / 195,000km battery warranty, blend with a 6-interval service plan and a dealer around every corner to end up with the perfect recipe for a modern southern African family vehicle.
