You should know: Unfortunately for Volksie’s finest, the Golf has also had to stem a rising tide of first Japanese, then Korean, and now Chinese competitors, who ramped up quantity before working on perceived quality. And hand on heart, most of them still have a while to go until they reach this car’s smooth drive and chunky door seals.
More info: Spend just a few minutes behind its snazzy steering wheel and you’ll experience how quietly and quickly it can zip around your village, efficiently coast along a crowded highway, load up bulky objects or paint a smile on your face through a big traffic circle. In typical Golf fashion, it’s a great all-rounder.
Why you should: This face-lifted / Mark 8.5 version is seriously good looking, don’t you agree? The proportions are bang-on, it’s got beautiful design details and delicate lines, while inside you’ll be greeted by German understatement, crisp screens and sensible switchgear, all showing improved user interfaces and very high levels of quality.
Why you shouldn’t: The price of around 620 to 700 thousand is a real problem when you compare the Golf to its less established and more gimmicky rivals. And I’d love to hammer on about value-for-money when you consider VW’s decades of experience, untold R&D levels or a great dealer and local factory setup… but most shoppers just look at price.
What else? The Golf has fallen so far out of favour that our local line-up only includes the hot version and one 1.4 TSi derivate with 110kW or 250Nm. And kudos to VW SA for jumping on the global sock-down-the-front-of-your-trousers trend by offering two versions: pretend sporty bits or pretend sporty bits plus.
For anyone who somehow still cares about the product more than their wallet – a tough ask, I admit – this 2025 Volkswagen Golf 1.4 TSi R-Line in Oyster Silver Metallic is extremely clever and versatile, safe and economical, good looking and now fitted with a physical volume control.
