Suzuki has officially introduced the all-new Suzuki Across to the South African market, marking an important step forward for the brand. Positioned as a modern, premium SUV, the Across also represents Suzuki’s first entry into hybrid technology locally.
Unveiled at an elegant gala dinner, the Across was showcased across a variety of landscapes and use-case scenarios — highlighting its versatility as a lifestyle vehicle. Suzuki’s vision is clear: to offer a more refined, tech-forward SUV that seamlessly integrates into everyday life. Whether it’s the school run, a gym session after work, or a weekend escape, the Across aims to cover it all.
First Impressions: Modern, Clean, and Feature-Packed
At first glance, the Across delivers a strong modern presence. Sharp lines, sleek edges, and full LED lighting give it a contemporary look, while alloy wheels and a choice of seven exterior colours allow for some personalisation.
Inside, the cabin is centred around a 10.1-inch infotainment display, complemented by a suite of advanced safety features. As a five-seater SUV, it offers a spacious interior and a generous boot, coming in slightly larger than the Suzuki Grand Vitara — positioning it well within the competitive compact SUV segment.
On the Road: Comfortable, But Needs More Urgency
The real test came the following morning, taking the Across along Cape Town’s scenic coastal routes.
Under the bonnet sits a 1.5L four-cylinder petrol engine producing 76kW and 137Nm, paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Supporting this is a mild-hybrid system using an ISG (Integrated Starter Generator), adding 2.2kW and 55Nm to assist the engine.
On paper, the figures are modest — and that’s reflected in real-world driving. Initial acceleration and low-end pull feel underwhelming, particularly when overtaking or pulling away. However, once the revs climb, the engine becomes more responsive and usable.
Driving the GLX automatic, the gearbox tends to favour lower revs and is slow to downshift when more power is demanded. This can make the vehicle feel less responsive than it actually is.
Interestingly, using the paddle shifters to manage gears manually transforms the experience, allowing you to keep the engine in its optimal power band and extract more from it.
Ride Quality and Safety: A Strong Highlight
Where the Across shines is in its ride comfort and overall refinement. The coastal roads presented a mix of large dips and smaller imperfections — both of which the suspension handled well. Larger undulations were absorbed confidently, while smaller bumps were noticeable but not intrusive.
Suzuki has equipped the Across with its DSBS II (Dual Sensor Brake Support) driver assistance suite, including:
- Lane Keep Assist
- Adaptive Cruise Control
- High Beam Assist
- Rear Cross Traffic Alert
These features contribute significantly to the Across’ positioning as a modern, safety-focused SUV.
Interior: Premium Feel With a Few Odd Trade-Offs
Step inside, and the Across delivers on its promise of a more premium experience. The materials feel solid, with no noticeable squeaks or rattles. Features such as ventilated seats, a wireless charging pad, and the large infotainment system enhance the sense of modernity.
Space is also a strong point, with good rear legroom and a practical 333L boot, complemented by a hands-free powered tailgate.
However, not everything feels fully thought through. The driver benefits from an 8-way electrically adjustable seat, while the passenger seat remains manually adjusted. At the same time, the vehicle includes ambient lighting — creating a slightly mismatched balance between luxury and practicality.
Verdict: 80% There, With Room to Improve
Suzuki’s intent with the Across is clear — and for the most part, they’ve delivered. It successfully introduces a more premium, tech-forward offering into their lineup, backed by comfort, safety, and everyday usability.
That said, it feels like the final 20% falls short due to a few unusual feature decisions and a drive train that lacks urgency at lower speeds.
