Does a locally-made expensive German sedan even stand a chance in today’s crazy cheap Asian SUV market? I think it still does…

You should know: You are now looking at a 2026 Mercedes-Benz C200 AMG Line in “Oh no, nothing weird please, I need to secure the trade-in value White”. However, someone was quite daring and clicked the box for “Black Cat Peanut Butter” seats. Our whole team agreed that the contrast was quite fetching.

Why you shouldn’t: Not so palatable were the many unkind comments about its alleged Renault engine, which not only turned out to be false, but one of the best things about this car… next to its sublime ride and luxurious interior.

Yes, you’ll find the same tech (and sometimes more) in cheaper vehicles but they also feel more, umm, cheap.

More info: The next problematic observation I made is that low-slung sedans are being elbowed out of our SUV-focussed motoring lives. Driveways and speed bumps seem steeper – exasperated by the W206’s low front skirts – while turning out of a multi-lane junction often becomes a guessing game as to what’s fast approaching behind that Fortuner fender…

Why you should: Because a 4×4 will never be able to turn, stop, start or cruise this quietly and comfortably. Quite a few SUV and crossovers may come close but if you often find yourself on long and tedious journeys, an accomplished sedan like this will suddenly make a lot of sense.

What else? That 1.5L mild hybrid turbo-petrol 4-cylinder is actually quite brawny, delivering 165kW or 300Nm through nine gears, thereby offering decent performance and dropping to a hilarious 5.8L/100km on a steady highway cruise. Mercedes claims an average of 6.8 from the 66L tank, 0-100 in just 7.3 seconds and a top speed of almost 250km/h.

In summary: Prices for a C200 AMG Line are unfortunately JUST north of 1 bar, making this neither good value nor very competitive, but it IS a luxury sedan with 140 years of heritage. That means this multi-generational compact sedan is jam-packed with decades of safety, comfort and refinement levels.

Each new C200 is sold with a 5-year/100,000km warranty and matching maintenance plan.
