Usually I approach bright, new packaging with a hefty dose of mistrust but in the automotive world I welcome freaky hues and multi-colour interiors with open arms. Our roads are far too polluted by white and silver cars with black interiors so I immediately took a shine to the Opel Corsa Colour Edition.
“I hope this car doesn’t end up being a tragic hero” mumbles my co-driver on the recent launch of the new Alfa-Romeo Giulietta. “You know mos, a fantastic car that everyone ignores” he concludes while we negotiate hundreds of kilometers on scenic Boland back roads.
Not many manufacturers can compete with the illustrious history of Opel, yet plenty of competitors enjoy a slightly rosier outlook for the future. The American General, a Canadian conglomerate, Opel workers and Germany’s chancellor were all tugging at each of Opel’s four corners recently.
After much deliberation and staring at a semi-dirty laptop monitor I have decided that there is no other way of typing this: Opel is back. By spending almost a week with the freshly baked Astra Turbo I am thrilled to report that the German General Motors division has built an absolute winner.

Die naam Astra het beslis iets te doen met sterre en futuristiese stories. En die nuwe Opel Astra hier te lande is een wat beslis met ‘n oog op die toekoms ontwerp is.
