Globally and locally, the midsize SUV market is arguably the most fiercely contested segment in the automotive industry. In this arena, making a mistake—even a minor one—can significantly damage a brand’s market share. This makes the arrival of the third-generation Audi Q3 a highly critical milestone for the Ingolstadt brand.

Luckily, Audi starts from a position of strength, having sold over 18 000 units of the previous-generation Q3 in South Africa alone. However, with rapidly growing competition—particularly from highly competitive new entrants from China—Audi cannot afford to rest on its laurels. While we want to avoid jumping the gun before completing a full weekly road test, early indicators suggest that Audi has done exactly what was required to secure its territory.

Trim Levels and Styling
The local line-up spans both standard SUV and sloped-roof Sportback body styles, divided into four distinct trim levels: Base, Advanced, S Line, and S Line Black.
All derivatives feature LED headlights and taillights as standard equipment. Opting for the sportier S Line and S Line Black packages upgrades the standard alloys to larger 19-inch wheels, adding a more assertive, planted stance to the crossover.

The interior architecture has undergone a complete transformation. The dashboard is dominated by a clean layout consisting of an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster and a prominent 12.8-inch central infotainment touchscreen. By moving the gear selector to the steering column behind the wheel (a configuration familiar to drivers of another luxury German brand), Audi has opened up significant storage and breathing room on the centre console.
Interior space matches expectations for a premium family vehicle, offering comfortable headroom and legroom. The luggage compartment is highly adaptable; depending on how far you slide the adjustable second-row bench, boot capacity ranges between a usable 488 and 575 litres.

Proven Powertrains
Under the bonnet, Audi has leaned on its proven, carried-over powerplants, offering two 110 kW options.
The entry-point is the 1.4-litre TFSI turbo petrol engine, producing 110 kW and 250 Nm of torque. For those planning frequent long-distance open-road excursions or towing duties, the 2.0-litre TDI turbodiesel is the obvious preference. While it matches the petrol engine’s 110 kW output, it ups the torque stakes significantly to a meatier 360 Nm. Both engines drive the front wheels via a swift-shifting 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission.

While we were unable to attend the national launch event ourselves, reports from industry colleagues note a substantial improvement in overall refinement. The cabin isolation keeps wind and road noise firmly at bay, while the powertrains deliver rapid, predictable power delivery. Handling characteristics have also taken a step forward, largely courtesy of a revised suspension layout that introduces a new 2-valve damper system to better balance body control with ride comfort over uneven tarmac.

The Verdict
The premium compact crossover segment has evolved into a high-stakes game where brand loyalty alone is no longer enough to guarantee sales. Audi needed this third-generation Q3 to make a decisive technology and refinement statement to ward off aggressive competition.
By integrating cutting-edge flagship interior architecture, maintaining reliable engine options, and genuinely sorting out the ride compliance with the new 2-valve dampers, they have done exactly that. While final judgment stays reserved for a comprehensive test on home soil, the new Q3 appears well-equipped to defend its predecessor’s impressive sales legacy.
