It’s tough at the top and even tougher to stay there – something Toyota Motors South Africa is keen to achieve by giving their product line up a thorough seeing to. Their immediate plan appears to include a dash of excitement and further riding of the hybrid wave.

Please accept my apologies for only putting fingers to keyboard now, even though we parted ways a few weeks ago. I won’t give you the whole “it’s not you, it’s me” routine but have to note that I was extremely busy recently.
Lexus South Africa recently invited us to the launch of the CT200h, the third hybrid available locally from this luxury Japanese brand. Slotting in behind the snazzy RX450h SUV and refined GS450h saloon, the CT200h is the world’s first full hybrid luxury compact car.
Testing a hybrid automobile isn’t a very pleasurable experience for a motoring journalist and/or petrol-head. I would imagine it feels like a food critic having to evaluate an instant diet meal because the media alleges that we’re getting too fat and we’re running out of milk.
First impressions are vital but can often be misleading. Actually I was supposed to tell you about the new Honda CRZ Hybrid today but a slight mishap landed me in the driver’s seat of the equally hybrid Honda Insight. And my initial impressions were rather mixed…

Unless you haven’t notice it yet, the motor industry has taken some considerable turns in recent times. Rather green turns. Manufacturers had to react quickly to counter the recession and play along with the current mentality of consumers and the press.
Four point five litres per hundred kilometres; that was the average consumption of the new Toyota Prius I recently drove for two days on its official launch. The third generation Prius will shortly be available from selected Toyota dealerships to maintain and build on its ecological and economical image. Especially the second model (2003) made the Prius into a runaway success, so much so that in April 2008 it smashed the one million sales mark since its first incarnation arrived in 1997.
