Sedert die Vivo die laaste 2009 Citi Golf oorgeneem het, het die vervaardiger sowat 193 343 eenhede verkoop en hulle is nie van plan om daar te stop nie. Inteendeel, Volkswagen is van plan om nog meer te verkoop as ooit van tevore. Die vraag is egter: Sal hulle hierin slaag?
I’ve long held the belief that entry-level models need not be rubbish, especially when they’re made by the Volkswagen group. A few years ago I tested the most basic Golf; and loved it. Same thing with the equivalent New Beetle or Audi A3 and A6; the cheapie models are excellent. So what’s the most affordable Polo like?
Whether you have just finished your K53 training, have been driving for 50 years, or aspire to become a racing driver, most of us like to be reassured that we are competent and well-rounded drivers. However, truth be told, everyone makes mistakes, even if you manage to win a Formula 1 race every other weekend.
Since its inception in 2010, the Polo Vivo has been the best-selling car on the market. With the discontinuing of the “Citi” (MKI Golf) models, the Vivo became known as one of the best “value-for-money” packages. It sold 193,343 units since 2010. We were recently invited by Volkswagen South Africa to attend the launch of the all-new Polo Vivo in Port Elizabeth.
Volkswagen has been the top passenger car seller for the past seven years in South-Africa, with the manufacturer topping the sales list every month with their Polo Vivo and Polo models. In 2017 alone, it sold 22 916 units in South Africa. Every 1.57 seconds, the Uitenhage Plant produces a Polo to become someone’s new family member.
What you need to know: Renault’s fourth-generation Clio arrived with new technology, great prices and fantastic looks – its fame was short-lived though because it hit a few wobblies with quality and servicing. RS stands for “RenaultSport” and is the hot-hatch model for battling Polo and 208 GTi’s.

Die nuwe Volkswagen Polo R-line is pure pret. Vir enigiemand wat hou van ‘n ruim stadsmotor met genoeg krag om die langpad Noorde toe kaf te draf, is dié nuwe Polo ‘n goeie opsie. Vanuit ‘n praktiese oogpunt, is dit ‘n betroubare en veilige motor, wat met die Bluemotion tegnologie sorg vir effektiewe brandstofverbruik.
We may have a problem. Well, maybe not all of us but a very specific group of people. In fact, it’s only a tiny percentage of the population but I fear that the issue is so grave that it warrants its own set of paragraphs and a jolly good rant.
Should you buy a cheap car? In a market where the predominant buying power is in the lower ranks, it’s a question I’ve heard many times. My immediate answer usually involves a demo or second-hand example of a better car because they offer more value than something cheap and cheerful straight out of the box.
What you need to know: Like most local cars – especially cool ones – the Volkswagen up! had been around for a while before it landed here. It’s what the Golf used to be – affordable hatchback transport for the Volk. It’s also what the Polo used to be – smaller and more affordable than a Golf.
