In the eye of the beholder. Beauty can be a fickle, fleeting and quite subjective matter but occasionally it can also be universal. This most certainly applies to the Mercedes-Benz C300 Coupé I tested recently because everyone – every single observer I talked to – noted how pretty it looked.
Around the 1990’s, Mercedes-Benz jumped on the band-wagon of extending their product range. Where before the E-Class, S-Class, SL and Geländewagen were all the cars you could ever need, showrooms were suddenly cluttered with the likes of C-Class, CLK, SLK, ML and A-Class.
Some things in life can be classless. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re overly bland or common (wif a capital K) because the beauty of something classless means that it’s a great all-rounder; it fits in everywhere. Like a white collar shirt, a grey handbag or the new VW Passat.
What you need to know: The Jaguar XE is the latest attempt from this British manufacturer to stir up that German pot of 3-Series, A4 and C-Class. With newer technology and Jaguar’s stunning design cues, the XE should stand a better chance than its X-Type predecessor. If it weren’t for that annoying exchange rate…
Over the years I’ve realized that motoring reviews serve just two purposes. The first and most obvious is to test (but often regurgitate) specifications and other quantifiable attributes of cars which everyone could call up on their smartphone in under a minute. The second bit is more important.
The smoother coincidence
Recent events have shoved the giant car maker Volkswagen onto its back feet but the colossus is using this situation to leap up with new focus and new products. Although it’s probably coincidence, their timing couldn’t have been better to introduce the new-generation Passat in southern Africa.
What you need to know: The Audi A6 is a medium luxury sedan which, while hugely popular overseas, joins its brethren from Mercedes and BMW in the friend zone. Everyone respects them but buys their smaller brothers (A4, C-Class and 3-Series) while lusting after the big A8, S-Class or Seven Series.
The best bus?
Like most of its competitors, Mercedes-Benz is on a serious mission to build more and more models in an effort to offer their products in almost every market segment. They’ve also been fiddling with their range descriptions and the latest addition slots in at the end – this new V-Class.
