We may have a problem. Well, maybe not all of us but a very specific group of people. In fact, it’s only a tiny percentage of the population but I fear that the issue is so grave that it warrants its own set of paragraphs and a jolly good rant.
The booming SUV market worldwide and in southern Africa has seen more and more competitors pop up for a piece of the action. Not too long ago, prospective buyers of luxury soft-roaders could call on Mercedes, BMW or Land-Rover. Then came Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Volvo and now – Jaguar.
I’ve always attempted to deviate from the norm. It’s more fun that way. Why settle for what everyone else has? Why follow the crowd? Sure, it’s a lot safer, people won’t point fingers at you but I think you lose your sense of identity by being so-called ‘normal’ and quite frankly, that’s too boring for my taste.

Over the years I’ve realized that motoring reviews serve just two purposes. The first and most obvious is to test (but often regurgitate) specifications and other quantifiable attributes of cars which everyone could call up on their smartphone in under a minute. The second bit is more important.

Last week I tested an excellent mid-size luxury sedan with a very economical diesel engine, which made my review quite easy. This week, I face the opposite end of the scale and a bit of a problem. After getting my knickers in a twist about the 2-litre turbo-charged Jaguar XF we tested recently, it seems appropriate that its bigger XJ brother restored the family honour this week. I’ve tested two XJ’s before, a turbo-diesel V6 and petrol V8, this new supercharged V6 petrol replacing the latter model.
