Compact executive sedans enjoy great popularity in South Africa and chances are good that you’re no more than twenty paces away from a 3-Series, A4 or C-Class. And rightly so, these arch enemies have never been closer and more accomplished than today.

Dit is dus ook geen wonder dat die Volkswagen CC in Europa en ook in Australië verskeie pryse vir sy ontwerp gewen het nie.
So the year’s almost over and you’ve been playing with the idea of a new luxury German car. The C-Class, A4 and 3-Series are just too obvious and plentiful. The A8, Seven and S-Class are too big, which just leaves you with the 5-Series, E-Class or the new Audi A6.
A few weeks ago I tested the Volkswagen Passat and described it as agreeable but misunderstood, mostly because it was too close to a Jetta in size and execution. And wouldn’t you know it, last week a new gen-six Jetta 1.6 TDI Comfortline knocked on my door.
After many thoughts of rejection, years of feeling inadequate and a growing inferiority complex, I finally whipped out my big red pen and made an X next to the word Audi. That’s right – for reasons unknown, this is my virgin test of an Ingolstadt car.
Pull up a chair and settle down in the middle of obscurity and the apex of pleasantness. Volkswagen’s Passat has always been an agreeable motor car which few people understood, especially since the favoured four-door Volksie sedan on local shores has long been the Jetta.
