I am somewhat cynical about driving supposed ‘crossover’ SUV-type cars. Too often, I have been left feeling somewhat deflated as far as their performance is concerned, especially once you leave the tar. So it was with little enthusiasm that I received the keys to Subaru’s XV to try it out. Happily, a few surprises lay in store for me.

En laat mens dan ook maar dadelik byvoeg dat Peugeot met die 4008 weereens meer as voldoen aan die hoë standaarde van betroubaarheid en rygenot waaraan Peugeot aanhangers sedert die dae van die 404 en 504 so gewoond geraak het.
Motorised vehicles have taken a lot of flak in recent times due to exploding numbers, dwindling resources and nasty emissions. Toyota was pioneering with their hybrid cars, although these also gathered quite a bit of criticism. Believe it or not, today I won’t add any more to that.
Vying for your attention this week is the Mitsubishi ASX, a crossover SUV that arrived fashionably late in the world of “Honey, let’s buy a 4×4 that isn’t a 4×4.” You or I could criticise and mock all we like but this niche of the market is alive and well.
It’s tough at the top and even tougher to stay there – something Toyota Motors South Africa is keen to achieve by giving their product line up a thorough seeing to. Their immediate plan appears to include a dash of excitement and further riding of the hybrid wave.

Lexus South Africa recently invited us to the launch of the CT200h, the third hybrid available locally from this luxury Japanese brand. Slotting in behind the snazzy RX450h SUV and refined GS450h saloon, the CT200h is the world’s first full hybrid luxury compact car.
Testing a hybrid automobile isn’t a very pleasurable experience for a motoring journalist and/or petrol-head. I would imagine it feels like a food critic having to evaluate an instant diet meal because the media alleges that we’re getting too fat and we’re running out of milk.
Ons het in 1997 ‘n paar maande in Berlyn gewoon toe Kleinboet-Benz die lig gesien het; die A-Klas van Mercedes het ‘n Sweedse toets gedop en dit het ‘n hele tydjie geduur om oor die skok te kom. Maar soos dit gaan met kinders wat ‘n terugslaggie op skool ervaar, het die ouers vinnig ingegryp om te kyk wat daar met Kleinboet skort – en of die probleme opgelos en vermy kan word. Al kos dit nou ook geld en ekstra voorbereiding om Kleinboet weer op die been te kry.
