So it’s finally holiday time and you’re off to the coast with your boat to visit the in-laws. Or perhaps your daughter got a new horse for Christmas? In both cases you have our sympathy.
Jokes aside though, here’s our little list of cars that can tow big loads, arranged by number of models and total weight. Please note that we based this list on manufacturer’s figures and advise that you confirm any data with your local retailer.
The cheerful combo
Cars can be so boring. White and silver boxes stuck in a slow and endless march to work, seas of grey metal in a dark multi-story office car park with the odd red or yellow specimen parked under a sign proclaiming “Reserved for Marketing”. Suzuki certainly recognized this with the launch of their brand-new Vitara.

As a belated happy birthday to Namibia, we’ve made a wee list of some cars which were also born in 1990.
What did we like? Stunning electric blue colour (Malta Blue – exclusive to this range), great lines and funky 17-inch spoked alloy wheels. Stylish light clusters. The Renault Megane GT-line is a looker. Power delivery from the 97kW turbo charged engine is immediate and responsive. Handles well on the road.
It’s not every day that I get to test a car that I instantly take a liking to. The new Renault Clio RS, on the other hand, is exactly the sort of car that I love getting my hands on. There’s so much appeal in this little hot hatch – from its spunky shape, sporty lines, fantastic, strange angles and eye-catchingly bright metallic yellow paintwork to its slick interior, with trendy red trim and shiny finishes. I couldn’t wait to drive it.
Namibian and South Africans love cheap cars almost as much as their adventurous, outdoorsy lifestyle. Hence it will come as no surprise to anyone that affordable SUV’s are on the up and Renault S.A. jumped at the opportunity to bring their budget bruiser, the Duster, to our local shores.
Just when you thought it was safe to venture out into the hot hatchback-mad streets again, Volkswagen comes to the late night drag racing party. Their venerable GTi embodies the hot hatch rather well but who will defend the family name at the traffic lights? The Golf R, that’s who.
Toe die eerste Sandero ‘n paar jaar gelede op die mark gekom het dit gou heelwat aanhangers tot gevolg gehad – die prys was reg, voldoende krag (tog effe flou) en spasie, maar nie so lig op brandstof soos sommige van sy mededingers nie. Nou het Renault die Sandero heeltemal verfris met ‘n nuwe voorkoms en ‘n nuwe enjin – ‘n klein 900cc turbo.
Formula One. It’s undoubtedly one of the pinnacles of motorsport and a showcase of what’s technically possible when budgets and signwriting are unlimited. Many people will tell you that it’s a proving ground for new tech and the clever new gizmos eventually end up in your next car.
